Will MS Dhoni return to the Indian team? Legendary Kapil Dev says could be difficult

Update: 2020-02-03 22:01 IST

Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev has expressed his doubts over MS Dhoni's comeback to the Indian cricket team.

Dhoni has not played international cricket since Team India's exit at the Cricket World Cup 2019 after losing to New Zealand in the semi-final. He was also recently omitted from BCCI's central contract list.

While there is no concrete information regarding Dhoni's comeback, India's 1983 World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev has said while it will be very difficult for Dhoni to return to the Indian dressing room, his form in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 will be crucial.

"If you haven't played cricket for so long then I don't think you can come back from anywhere. But he still has IPL, his form there will be important and selectors should see what is best for the country.

Dhoni has done a lot for the country but when you don't play for 6-7 months, you leave a doubt in everyone's mind. And then that creates a lot of discussions which shouldn't happen," Kapil told ABP News.

Dhoni's omission from the central contract was not surprising as he has not played for India in a very long time. He has missed the tour of the West Indies and the home series against South Africa, Bangladesh, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, away T20I series against New Zealand and is unavailable for the soon to begin ODI series as well against the BlackCaps.

IN a recent interview, Indian head coach Ravi Shastri hinted that although Dhoni could be soon ending his ODI career, he could be in contention for this year's T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to begin in October in Australia.
