Apple, Facebook, Google and other firms to work on new WiFi network
It looks like tech giants of the Silicon Valley comprising of Apple, Broadcom, Facebook, Google, HP, Qualcomm and others have come together to make WiFi connectivity better and easier in the future. The wifinowevents.com website reported that the group has pitched the idea of a new WiFi bandwidth for 6GHz before the Federal Communications Commission.
It is said the new WiFi band will bring new short-range and reliable connectivity for several types of devices including AR/VR headsets, smartphones, laptops, tablets and more.
"As detailed in the slide presentation, we explained that VLP operations in the 6 GHz band operating without Automated Frequency Coordination ("AFC") at 14 dBm EIRP, or -5 dBm/MHz radiated Power Spectral Density ("PSD"), would present no real-world risk of harmful interference to licensed FS operations. We also explained that the 4 dB of body loss included in the PSD analysis on slide 4 of the presentation is a very conservative estimate of losses given the common use cases VLP would support, such as automotive infotainment, device-to-device video streaming, mobile AR/VR, and tethering," mentioned the letter sent to FCC Secretary Marlene Dortch.
Apple and Google are supporting 6GHz WiFi with a reason that they can use it for their smartphones, AR/VR headset, virtual assistant based car infotainment system, and other devices that can use the same band. The arrival of this new band will also likely boos the use of 5tG connectivity in smartphones. This all is yet to be finalised by the FCC.
As mentioned this tech could also bring peer to peer connectivity between vehicles, so that in future it prevent crashes between self-driving cars, Apple seems to be working on this project.
