Bid Adieu Windows 7: Upgrade Your PC to Windows 10

Update: 2020-01-14 12:00 IST

Microsoft launched Windows 7 in July 2009. And now, nearly after 10 years after its initial rollout Microsoft is ending support for Windows 7.

In 2015 Microsoft had ended mainstream support for Windows 7, but from today, it will no longer roll out security updates to its operating system. This means that Microsoft will no longer work towards fixing bugs and security threats in Windows 7 that users might encounter in future.

Microsoft urges users to install Windows 10 sometime before January 2020, as a replacement. "After January 14, 2020, if your PC is running Windows 7, it will no longer receive security updates. Therefore, it's important that you upgrade to a modern operating system such as Windows 10, which can provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safer. Also, Microsoft customer service will no longer be available to provide Windows 7 technical support. Related services for Windows 7 will also be discontinued over time. For example, certain games such as Internet Backgammon and Internet Checkers as well as Electronic Program Guide for Windows Media Center are scheduled to be discontinued in January 2020," says Microsoft's support documentation for Windows 7.

Follow these simple steps to download Windows 10 on your PC:

 Go to Download Windows 10 website

 Under Create Windows 10 installation media, click Download tool now and Run

 To upgrade the same PC that you are working on select Upgrade this PC now option

 Now start following the prompts

 When the upgrading process is over, go to Settings Update & Security > Activation. Here you will see a digital license for Windows 10. And you are done.

Remember that Windows 7 Home and Windows 8 Home users can only upgrade to Windows 10 Home. In the same way, only Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Pro users can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.
