Two-thirds of Android's antivirus apps are entirely useless

Update: 2019-03-18 12:45 IST

As per the exact new tests undertaken by AV-Comparatives, out of the Android antivirus apps available for devices two-thirds of the apps offer no protection at all.

To offer systemic testing of security software in its ongoing assignment, the autonomous organization put 250 Android antivirus apps through their paces and found out that around 80 of them failed to meet basic security and even the site's minimum requirements.

According to the 2019 test of the site, less than a third of the apps examined managed to detect at least 30% of 2018's nasty apps with zero false alarms. Most of the apps that failed to meet the site's standards regularly found popular authentic apps to be harmful, and nasty ones to be safe.

In large part, that ineffectiveness stems from the apps that not actually have scanning code. Most of them were noticed to be working from outdated and dubious blacklists and whitelists, fading to detect nasty packages but were named like the most trusted apps for e.g. 'com.facebook' or 'com.whatsapp'.

The apps those who managed to pass out with good score included many big names from well known and respected antivirus companies, such as Kaspersky Lab, McAfee, Avast, AVG, Trend Micro and Symantec.
