Airtel to Launch VoWi-Fi Calling Service in December; This is How it Works

Update: 2019-11-29 16:32 IST

Currently, Airtel is testing VoWi-Fi (Voice over Wi-Fi) calling in several locations across the country. So, with this service, users will be able to make calls using their Wi-Fi connection even when the cellular network is not available.

As per ET Telecom report, Airtel has completed its beta trials of VoWi-Fi calling with its employees and select customers also. The report also says that Airtel will officially launch the VoWiFi calling service in December. Airtel sources confirmed that it is testing VoWi-Fi calling in several locations and the service will be available very soon though Airtel has not confirmed whether it will make this service available across the country or it will be offered in selected cities.

As per Times Now report, as of now Airtel's VoWi-Fi calling service is available for select flagship devices like Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. Reliance Jio is also offering this VoWi-Fi service for the iPhone 11 Pro. Users who own any of these devices with an Airtel or Jio connection can try out the service.

How VoWi-Fi Service Works

First of all, from the call settings menu on their phones, users have to turn on VoWi-Fi. You can find this feature under the name 'Wi-Fi Calling'. Wi-Fi calling will be activated once this is turned ON when there is low cellular connectivity or no reception at all. Just like 4G VoLTE, VoWi-Fi calling will be enabled whenever available and applicable. But do remember that there has to be an active Wi-Fi connection for this service to work.

VoWi-Fi calling is similar to WhatsApp, FaceTime and Messenger call. VoWi-Fi calling also works the same way, but this service doesn't require an additional app, it will be built-in. There won't be any additional charges either on making VoWi-Fi calls.
