Explained: Everything about the Signal App

Soon after WhatsApp highlighted its new terms of service scheduled to go into effect from February 8, 2021, Signal has become the number one app on the App Store in India and was downloaded over 10 million times from Play Store. Here we bring some critical questions about Signal, and how does the app work?

What is the Signal app?

Signal is an instant messaging, voice and video calling app for Android, iOS, and desktop. It uses end-to-end encryption protocols to protect all communications with other Signal users. All calls, including long-distance and international calls, are encrypted and made over a data connection or Wi-Fi and are free. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, American whistleblower Edward Snowden, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey have publicly recommended using Signal. Signal is available on Android, iOS and desktop.

Who is the owner of the Signal app?

The Signal app was developed in 2018 by Moxie Marlinspike and Brian Acton. The foundation was started with seed funding of $ 50 million from Acton, which had left WhatsApp's parent company Facebook in September 2017. It was earlier managed by the Open Whisper Systems project that Marlinspike founded in 2013. Signal Messenger LLC is an organization funded by the Signal Foundation, a non-profit organization, and all of its products are released as free and open-source software.
