Google Chrome to Eliminate 'annoying' Video Ads

Update: 2020-02-06 14:43 IST

Your browsing experience is soon going to be more pleasant on Google Chrome as it is eliminating those annoying video ads from YouTube and other websites. Product manager Jason James announced on the Chromium blog post, and the team confirmed that the Coalition for Better Ads had announced new standards for ads that appear in videos. Under this, websites should stop presenting three kinds of advertisements in the videos in the next four months.

Three Types of Ads:

1. Long, pre-roll ads that cannot be skipped or groups of ads longer than 31 seconds and get displayed before a video begins.

2. Ads that are shown in the middle of a video of any duration that obstructs the user experience.

3. Image or text advertisements that are displayed on the top of the video and are in the middle one-third of the video player window or cover more than 20 per cent of the video content.

In the blog post, Google has added that it will follow the new standards set by the Coalition for Better Ads. "Following the Coalition's lead, beginning August 5, 2020, Chrome will expand its user protections and stop showing all ads on sites in any country that repeatedly show these disruptive ads," James stated.

To be noted, this will also affect YouTube videos. "It's important to note that YouTube.com, like other websites with video content, will be reviewed for compliance with the Standards. Similar to the previous Better Ads Standards, we'll update our product plans across our ad platforms, including YouTube, as a result of this standard, and leverage the research as a tool to help guide product development in the future," further added James.

Website admins are also suggested to consider reviewing their site status in the Ad Experience Report. The tool will help them to detect if there are any ads on their website, which is violating the standards.
