2 women drown in Nagarjunasagar canal

Khammam: In a tragic incident, two women met watery grave when the car they were travelling in drowned in Nagarjunasagar canal at Gollagudem village in Khammam district on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Pogula Swathi (28), who was nine-month pregnant and her mother-in-law Pogula Indira (48), a resident of Jayyaram village of Chinagudur mandal in Mahabubabad district.

Swathi was a resident of Maripeda Bungalow in Maripeda mandal of Mahabubabad. She visited Khamamm along with her husband Pogula Mahipal Reddy and mother-in-law for medical check-up.

According to reports, when they were returning home, they stopped near the canal to attend nature's call. As Mahipal Reddy was reversing the car he lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into the canal waters.

Mahipal escaped by breaking the car windows, but the women drowned. Their bodies and the car were retrieved from the canal. Khammam Rural police booked a case in connection with the incident and launched investigation.
