Aim to make Karimnagar as malnutrition-free

Karimnagar: With a great aim towards a better and healthy society, ICDS Karimnagar is focusing on rural mass in creating awareness on nutrition among them by involving them in more than 2,000 programmes organised in the district from September to till date.

This included the participation of children and women groups, pregnant and lactating women with their family members, public representatives, NGOs, youth groups, farmers etc, through Poshan Abhiyaan Programme.

Women, Children, Disabled & Senior Citizens (WCD & SC) department was succeeded in garnering the attention of the public towards the importance and role of nutrition in all stages of life on the whole and the necessity of ICDS services in specific.

WCD&SC department in the district comprises of four ICDS projects - Karimnagar (Rural), Karimnagar (Urban), Huzurabad and Gangadhara – including 27,318 children aged between 0-3 years, 24,339 children aged between 3-6 years, and 10,129 pregnant and lactating mothers.

Through its unique supplementary nutrition programmes and Arogya Lakshmi, weight of 43,504 children was checked in the district throughout 777 anganwadi centres. Out of this total number of children, 37,078 are normal, 5,989 are moderate and 437 are severely undernourished for whom supervisory feeding is given and referred to Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) at the district headquarters in coordination with health department and RBSK (Rashtriya Bala Swasthya Karyakram).

Poshan Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) was initiated from 2017-18 financial year with the aim to improve the nutritional levels of children up to 6 years age, pregnant women and lactating mothers through specific targets for reduction in low birth weight.

Poshan Abhiyaan was launched on 8 March 2018. September months was celebrated as national nutrition month (Rashtriya Poshan Maah) throughout the country by women and child welfare department in coordination with all the department concerned.

Community-level awareness programmes, house visits 'Intintiki Anganwadi' and rallies were held in villages in the district. In continuation to this, from March 8 to 22 Poshan Pakhwada (Poshan fortnight) was organised in Karimnagar district with a wide range of programmes like cycle rallies by children, AG's youth and women groups, youth, farmers focusing on important of nutrition and highlighting the ICDS services like Arogya Lakshmi, SNP and growth monitoring.
