Asifabad: Alert volunteers of Childline and District Child Protection Unit successfully stopped a marriage of a minor, as her parents were trying to get her married to a 24-year-old man at Dadpapur village under Asifabad mandal, Komaram Bheem-Asifabad district on Wednesday.

As the wedding invitation card gave out the venue of the marriage, the officials visited the bride's residence in the village and stopped the marriage after explaining to those concerned the legal impediments involved in getting an under-aged girl married to a youth and about the consequences of violating Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006.

Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Savitri advised the parents of the bridegroom to conduct the marriage only after the girl completed 18 years of age. The written statements were taken from the patents of both the bride and bridegroom stating that they would not continue with the marriage proposal for now. ASI Dayanand, Sarpanch Lakshminarayana, secretary Sri Teja, child welfare committee members and others present.
