Congress leaders told to rev up membership drive

Hyderabad: All India Congress Committee general secretary and incharge of Telangana Congress RC Khuntia on Tuesday called upon the party rank and file to take up membership drive on a large scale.

Addressing the meeting of the executive committee of the PCC, he said that party has 20 lakh members and this number should be crossed.

However, he said there are no targets. The meeting was presided over by PCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy. Khuntia said that this time there would be no active memberships and the general membership should be given at Rs 5.

He said that membership drive should not be done from the homes. He suggested that in each constituency at least 30,000 memberships should be achieved.

He said that training camps on the party's ideals and policies would be held and the details of it would be informed after receiving the guidelines of AICC in this regard. Khuntia said that the economy of the country was in chaos and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has pointed it out.

He said that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre has been working only to hog the headlines. He said that another meeting would be conducted on the programmes over the downtrend in economy. He said that plans for the municipal elections would be finalised after the court clears the issue.

He said that the party should prepare itself to face the Huzurnagar bypoll and the agitation on the issue of uranium mining would be taken up after the committee being appointed in this regard gives its report.

PCC president Uttam Kumar Reddy said that on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a huge rally would be taken out from Gandhi Bhavan on October 2.

He said that on October 10 rallies should be held in all the district headquarters and on 15 Gandhi Jayanthi would be held in the headquarters of the Assembly constituencies.
