Congress pins hopes on past development for bypoll win

Update: 2019-10-21 02:20 IST

Hyderabad: The Congress is pinning its hopes on the development being done by it in the past 10 years for a win in Huzurnagar Assembly Constituency where polling would be held on Monday.

Congress candidate N Padmavathi Reddy would test her luck in the polling to be held in the constituency. She is fighting from the constituency for the first time.

The ruling party fielded Saidi Reddy as its candidate. He lost to her husband N Uttam Kumar Reddy, who represented Huzurnagar for two times in the past. The TRS candidate lost to Congress in general elections to the Assembly in 2014 and 2018.

Padmavathi has been contesting on behalf of the Congress as Uttam Kumar Reddy has resigned to the MLA post after being elected to Lok Sabha from Nalgonda Parliamentary Constituency.

The Congress leaders have joined the hands for the campaign in the by-poll. Leaders like A Revanth Reddy, K Venkat Reddy, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, V Hanumantha Rao, K Jana Reddy, R Damodar Reddy, Sravan Dasoju and others have held campaign on behalf of Congress in Huzurnagar for the last two weeks.

The party has put up a good show of strength in the last two days of the campaign. Thousands have turned out to the public meetings being organised by the party and addressed by Uttam, Revanth and Venkat Reddy on the last two days of the campaign.

Leaders of Congress faced a tough time in the constituency from the observers of the Election Commission of India. The EC observers closely followed the campaign to find the violations of model code of conduct.

The police officials have asked PCC president and Nalgonda MP Uttam Kumar Reddy to leave the constituency on Sunday. However, Uttam refused to obey the orders. He has written a letter to the Election Commission in this regard. The Congress leaders are confident of putting up a good fight in Huzurnagar.

They have been pinning hopes on the development achieved by Uttam Kumar Reddy as legislator in the constituency in the last ten years.

In several meetings, Uttam claimed that he has achieved lot of development in the constituency though the Congress was in opposition from 2014. He said that TRS could not ensure the progress.

The Congress is also depending on the anti-establishment vote in the constituency. It believes that the anti-incumbancy has spread in the constituency in the past nine months and people would vote against the policies of the TRS government.
