Hyderabad: Despite the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University- Hyderabad (JNTU-H) issuing a warning of tough action like cancellation of affiliation, several private engineering colleges across the State have already commenced the admissions for the category-B seats.

According to Telangana Engineering Students Joint Action Committee president Sharan Raichur, admissions to category-B seats should be on the basis of the marks obtained in the JEE-Mains.

The colleges have been asked by the JNTU-H not to commence admissions before filling the convenor quota seats. The colleges should give advertisement for filling the Category-B seats.

But in gross violation of the rules, despite the State government adopting a tough stand to curb the irregularities in the engineering colleges for the last five-and-half-years, the colleges seemed to have turned a deaf ear to the rules and continued to selling seats at an exorbitant price.

Speaking to The Hans India, Raghu Ram (name changed), who sought admission in a reputed engineering college at Pocharam, said the college informed him that the seats in the BTech Information technology branch under category-B had already been filled.

The core subject branches like Electronics Communication Engineering (ECE) would come with a price tag of around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 14 lakh capitation fee under the category-B seats.

Adding to this, some group colleges are blocking a good number of seats in the core subjects to create artificial scarcity so as jack up the prices of the category-B seats.

Saying that the manipulations by the colleges caused injustice to deserving students, Sharan demanded that the JNTU-H take tough action against erring institutions.

Meanwhile, the officials of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) said the parents and students can lodge complaints against any engineering college for collecting capitation fee.

The parents and students can contact the Regional Officer, AICTE-SCRO, First Floor, Old MNicard Building, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Masab Tank, Hyderabad-500 076, Ph No 040-23340113, 23341036 and 23345071 (Fax No. 040.23340113).

Besides, the students and parents can also submit their grievance online through the Centralised Public Grievance Redress And Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) at https://pgportal.gov.in for the attention of the Ministry of MHRD and AICTE take up the issue, the AICTE sources said.
