Depleting water levels make life of villagers miserable in Wanaparthy

Wanaparthy: With steep fall in groundwater levels in Tumkunta and Yapatla villages of Veepanagandal mandal of Wanaparthy district, the people in these villagers are facing a tough time in procuring drinking water for themselves and for their cattle.

As the Veepanagandla mandal is located on the outskirts of both Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy districts, the Mission Bhagiratha project works in some of the villages have been going on at snail's pace. Because of this situation, the people of Tumkunta and Yaptla villages have been hit hard.

As these two villages did not receive adequate rainfall in the last three years, the groundwater level has gone below 30-35 meters. The borewells in these areas have gone dry and the villagers are struggling to procure drinking water.

"Though the authorities have laid the Mission Bhagiratha pipelines, we are not getting water through these pipes. The authorities are saying that as the construction of water tank was still going on, it would take some more time for the release water. At present, we are forced to fetch water from an old well to meet our daily requirements," said Umamaheshar Reddy, a resident of Tumkunta village.

The villagers of Tumkunta have fixed more than 50 pump sets into the well and drawing water from. The villagers have urged the authorities concerned to complete the Mission Bhagiratha works as early as possible and help them to quench their thirst.
