Hyderabad: The Telangana government was urged to extend Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes also to poor couples going for love marriages.

According to TRS MLA Padma Devender Reddy, girls from poorer sections, who are getting married against parents wishes are not getting financial assistance.

Speaking in the question hour, she pointed out the cheque is being given in the name of the mother of the bride for the two schemes.

And in case of love marriages where the lovers belonging to different communities are going for marriage, the mother of the bride is not coming forward to take the cheque on her name.

Hence, the financial benefit of Rs 1,00,116 is not reaching girls going for love marriages, she pointed.

The MLA wanted the government to look into this special case and take steps so that people going for love marriages against parent wishes also get the financial benefit.

TRS MLA Manchireddy Kishan Reddy stated that Kalyana Lakshmi scheme was not being given to girls getting married to government employees of fourth class category like peons, attenders etc.

He stressed that even if the girl comes from a poor financial background she is not being given the financial assistance, which is not fair, the MLA stressed.

Padma Devender Reddy and another TRS MLA Gongidi Sunitha have stated that this scheme is aimed at helping poor girls going for marriage and they opposed the present rule of checking the financial condition of the bridegroom to grant the assistance.

Gongidi Sunitha wanted the scheme to be extended to girls getting married at young age of 12 and 13 years and get separated and again go for second marriage after attaining 18 years.

In response, Backward Classes Welfare Minister G Kamalakar said that they would look into the issue of extending financial assistance to people going for love marriages.

He also assured that rules would be modified to take the financial condition of the girl's family for giving assistance henceforth.
