Five-day training programme for NIA prosecutors begins in city

Hyderabad: The NALSAR University of Law along with National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting a five-day training programme 'Prosecutors of NIA' from June 26th to 30th.

Inaugurating the training programme here on Wednesday, Yogesh Chandra Modi, Director General of NIA, highlighted the achievement of the NIA in the recent past.

Further, he said the conviction rate in NIA is about 93 per cent and that credit goes to NIA prosecutors.

He said the interrogation has to be objective and law officers should be attached to the investigation officer so that the officer can collect relevant shreds of evidence.

While talking about the credibility of NIA, he also mentioned that in the last couple of days, the Union Cabinet has approved to an amendment of NIA Act and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act to allow the NIA to probe cybercrimes and cases of Human trafficking etc. These amendments will give more teeth to the NIA, he said.

Justice KC Bhanu in his keynote address proposed that an amendment can be brought to reduce the standard of proof, from "Proof Beyond Reasonable Doubt." While highlighting the important cases pronounced by the apex courts of India, he gave valuable tips and suggestions to the trainee prosecutors of NIA.

SK Sharma, Legal Advisor of NIA said the prosecutors shall be updated in terms of appreciating Digital Evidence, Forensics etc.

Dr V Balakista Reddy, Registrar of NALSAR emphasised the achievements of NALSAR in recent past. Dr KVK Santhy, Coordinator of the programme mentioned the theme and scheme of the five-day programme.

This programme was attended by S Praveen Kumar, DIG, NIA, 14 prosecutors of NIA from various States, Professors Dr D Balakrishna, Dr G Mallikarjun, K Shiva Charan, Advocate and Research Associate of NALSAR, and student volunteers of NALSAR were present.
