Government imposes huge fines on unauthorised transport of construction waste

Hyderabad: Government on Monday issued orders imposing huge penalties on vehicles involved in unauthorised/dangerous transportation and dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste.

According to officials, the lorries/ heavy duty trucks have been carrying huge boulders and cut rocks, often put one on top of the other and these lorries are kept open at the back.

As a result, these boulders are often seen dangling and shaking dangerously when the vehicle is crossing over speed breakers, uneven patches on roads and turning thereby posing extreme danger to the vehicles following behind.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner wrote a letter to the department stating that the present penalties system for unauthorised/dangerous transportation and dumping of C&D waste is not sufficient to create deterrence, hence proposed to impose heavy penalties and the enforcement has to be carried out in a strict manner by GHMC in coordination with HMDA, RTA and Traffic police.

The government has proposed penalty of Rs 25,000 for the first offence, Rs 50,000 for the second offence and Rs 1 lakh along with confiscation of the vehicle used.

There is a provision for penalty of Rs 50,000 to be levied against the entity for every offence on whose behalf the C&D waste is being transported/ dumped in an unauthorised manner.
