Government Maternity Hospital to get facelift in Hanamkonda

Hanamkonda (Warangal-U): It is apparent that the Warangal Urban District Administration is keen on improving facilities in the State-run hospitals.

After initiating an action plan with an outlay of Rs 5.31 crore to put MGM Hospital back on the rails, the district administration has now shifted its focus on Government Maternity Hospital (GMH) in Hanamkonda where no less 1,000 deliveries are carried out every month.

Spread over five acres the GMH which is one of the oldest hospitals in the region had its heydays before private establishments mushroomed all over the city. Although it was the most sought after destination for the poor and middleclass pregnant women, the hospital lost the sheen with the successive governments failing to improve the facilities.

Since the State Government had launched KCR Kit Scheme on June 3, 2017, State-run hospitals witnessed a steep rise in institutional deliveries. The GMH is no exception as it gives at least 30 births a day. It may be mentioned here that under the scheme, the government is providing mothers and their newborns with 16 items worth Rs 2,000 - including clothes, baby soaps, baby oil, mosquito nets, baby powder, toys, napkins, two sarees etc. This apart, the administration is also providing Rs 13,000 to mothers of girls and Rs 12,000 to mothers of boys directly to their bank accounts in four instalments.

Against this backdrop, the district administration has now plans to give a facelift to the GMH. Speaking to The Hans India, Warangal Urban District Collector Prashanth Jeevan Patil said: "A blood storage unit, a mechanised laundry would be set up in the hospital with an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh. We have plans to set up an exclusive play zone for the children, an open gym and a Sulabh complex on the hospital premises."

As of now, the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC)-run Rs 5 a meal scheme carried in association with the Akshaya Patra Foundation on the hospital premises is of immense help to the attendants of patients, the Collector said, assuring of constructing a shed to be used as a dining hall. A mini RO water purifying plant will be provided for the canteen, he added.

The Collector and Warangal West MLA D Vinay Bhaskar who inspected the hospital on Thursday told the health officials to keep the precincts clean and hygienic.

We have plans to improve the aesthetics of the hospital besides ensuring infrastructural facilities. The GMH is not only popular in the erstwhile Warangal district but also has a large patronage from other districts. -- Urban District Collector Prashanth Jeevan Patil

The hospital will be developed on par with the corporate institutions. In addition to my MLA Local Area Development funds, efforts are also on to take monetary help from NRIs and philanthropists. A meeting will be conducted with the hospital development committee after August 15 to give a shape for the hospital development. -- Warangal West MLA D Vinay Bhaskar
