Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan advises Vice-Chancellors to encourage research

Hyderabad: State Governor and Chancellor of the State Universities Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan asked the State varsities in Telangana to encourage research and development activities and prepare a data bank of research papers and activities being undertaken by each university.

Addressing the Vice-Chancellors at a review meeting held here on Thursday, Dr Tamilisai reviewed the implementation of the academic calendar, the status of various academic programmes being offered at each of the universities, plans of the universities to improve standards of education and other issues.

The Chancellor asked the universities to strengthen libraries and encourage the use of digital resources, besides, suggested to concentrate on the health of the students by preparing 'health profile' of students, developing a nutritional index of the students in Telangana and also include Yoga in the curriculum.

While reviewing the campus, development activities and women education, the Governor asked each university to give priority to the safety of women on the campus.

This includes installing CCTV cameras at the women's hostels on the campus as part of the safety measures.

Appreciating the activities of the universities under extension and social work and adopting villages, she asked VCs to encourage students for taking up plantation programmes and interacting with communities regularly than intermittently.

Tamilisai stressed on the faculty in the Universities to play a key role in imbibing the concept of "Academic Social Responsibility" (ASR).

In turn, she said that this will help educated persons in the society to monitor the effective implementation of the Central and State government schemes meant for the benefit of people.

While stressing universities to offer job-oriented courses, the Governor asked the VCs to encourage study opportunities to NRI students. This will also help in tapping revenue to meet the growth plan of the universities, she added.

Earlier, Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) Chairman Prof T Papi Reddy gave an overview of the higher education in the State, followed by Secretary Education Dr B Janardhan Reddy presented a statistical note of growth and development of colleges and universities in the State.

Prof V Venkata Ramana, Vice-Chairman, TSCHE gave a detailed presentation on the steps taken for upgradation of curriculum, increasing internship opportunities to students and setting up incubators in Universities.
