Green revolution in Telangana finishes after taking up the third crop in summer
Hyderabad: The Green revolution in Telangana will be completed by taking up a third crop in summer. Having the enhanced irrigation capacity, the State is now looking at the third crop transforming the rain-fed agriculture of the State to commercial farming.
According to the sources, R Jagadeeshwar, Director of Research, PJTSAU said, "We are developing 125-day maturing variety paddy and other short-duration crops to match the short duration summer."
He said that the state agriculture department and the university have jointly set up "Diagnostic Teams" to look for insects and pests and to advise farmers on climatic changes which is dependent on the outcome of the crop. The university, on its part, is providing information to news channels and sending messages to 6.5 lakh farmers every week through mobile networks.
He added, "Similarly, soil characterisation of all districts is being done where the soil nutrients, Ph value and organic matter in the soil will be informed to the farmer so that he can take an informed decision."
The scientists at the university are also positive about the rainfall that the State had received so far. Till date, the State had received 178 mm which is almost doubled for the corresponding period last year. They said that 34% of excess rains will compensate for any dry spell in between. According to the sources, the State is going to receive enough rains till September which helps the farmers for being successful in regulated farming.
