Hyderabad: Not many are aware that a 50-year old Hyderabad hospital is frequented by Vitiligo patients from not only different parts of India but also from the world.

This hospital-National Research Institute of Unani Medicine (NRIUM) for skin disorders (which was known as Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine) under Ayush Department, Government of India is located at ESI crossroads near Erragadda.

People of different ages, right from children to old age people are getting benefitted by the medical treatment being offered in this hospital and the results are showing in few months time for a majority of them.

The positive word of mouth from patients undergoing treatment or who already underwent treatment is resulting in new patients to visit this hospital travelling thousands of kilometres in some cases.

According to Dr Munawwar Hussain Kazmi, Deputy Director (in-charge) for NRIUM for SD, patients, NRIs and foreign citizens from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Qatar, Yemen, Bangladesh, Mexico, Canada, USA, Romania etc. have availed treatment here in the recent past. Also, patients from AP, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and other parts of the country including North East have tried this Unani treatment, he added.

According to doctors, majority patients knock their doors after having tried other forms of treatment, mainly allopathic treatment but could not get desired results as there are only limited medical formulations.

"Vitiligo patients are put under bio-purification to detoxify the body and it requires 40 days on an average. Then medication is continued every month.

Majority of the patients are in the 25 to 35 age group. For some, it takes 6 months and others who have blotches at different places on the body it might take 2 years or more," the Deputy Director said.

The places affected are mostly palms, lips, sole, face, neck etc. Hospital doctors said many reasons for getting Vitiligo include lack of metabolism, fewer immunity levels, excessive use of antibiotics, allergic to sea-food, drinking the milk of cattle injected with oxytocin, eating chocolates and sweets etc.

Mohammed Nizamuddin, a 30-year old male from Uttar Pradesh, who went to Saudi Arabia has been visiting this hospital for treatment for the last seven or eight months.

He said he has been suffering from Vitiligo for last ten years and settled for Unani treatment finally after trying other forms of treatment that did not yield

desired results.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Kumar (name changed), a degree student from Adilabad district, who said he got Vitiligo on his face six years ago.

He said he has been using Unani medicine for the last few months and it is showing results with blotches on his facing lightly fading away compared to earlier.
