Hyderabad: Government harassing anti-CAA activists to please MIM in Nampally

Update: 2020-02-06 00:29 IST

Nampally: The Congress party on Wednesday alleged that the TRS government, at the instance of MIM leaders, was harassing the activists who participated in protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), NRC and NPR using local police.

TPCC minorities wing chairman Shaik Abdullah Sohail, in a media statement, alleged that more than 1,000 cases have been booked against those who participated in various protests held in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana against the CAA, NRC and NPR. He said a large number of women were also implicated in false cases just for their participation in agitation.

He pointed out that all the protests held across Telangana so far were totally peaceful without an iota of violence or provocative slogans. However, he said the local police have indiscriminately registered cases against hundreds of men and women so as to harass them and instill fear. Sohail alleged that the cases were being registered at the instance of MIM leaders who want to suppress the voice of common Muslims.

"At one side, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is opposing the CAA and on the other, he has apparently directed the Telangana police to curb all kinds of protest against CAA. If TRS is really against CAA and NRC, then why its government in Telangana is not allowing 'Shaheen Bagh' type protest. Continuous protests send a strong message to the Centre and builds pressure which might lead to withdrawal of contentious law. But the police are denying permission for all anti-CAA protests while allowing the pro-CAA demonstration. This is being done at the instance of MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi who is sensing a threat to his political career," he said.

Reminding that Minister K Tarakarama Rao, Talasani Srinivas Yadav and other leaders have targeted the MIM party during municipal polls and Talasani had even described MIM as an Old City party. He asked Owaisi to clarify whether the TRS and MIM alliance was still intact or they severed ties in view of forthcoming GHMC elections to mislead the people.
