Hyderabad: Impose fine if waste is not segregated, says Collector Hanumanth Rao

Patancheru: Sangareddy District Collector Hanumanth Rao on Thursday instructed the Ameenpur municipal employees to impose a fine of Rs 500 if any household fails to hand over segregated garbage to the sanitation staff and dump it in open places. He recalled that the civic body has provided separate containers for the purpose.

Speaking after inspecting the 'Pattana Pragathi' programme in wards I and II in Ameenpur, along with CMA Satyanarayana, Municipal Chairman Panduranga Reddy and councillors, Rao expressed concern that every open place in the town has become a dump yard. He advised residents to keep their houses and lanes clean and green.

Seeking to justify imposition of fines, the DC observed that people may not change unless coerced into and deterrents created for any violations. "If no fine is collected, people will not fear. Every house is being provided separate containers for wet and dry garbage. If segregated garbage is not handed over to the sanitation staff, fines can't be avoided. If garbage is dumped in open area, penalty will be collected," he said, stressing that the town's development would not be possible without people's cooperation.

Addressing meetings with local residents, Satyanarayana pointed out that unhealthy surrounding were giving rise to malaria, dengue and that. If underground drainage was provided sewerage nalas would go dry and mosquito menace would disappear. He assured residents that UGD works in the town would be completed in the next 10 days. If UGD connections were provided to every house and roads laid, people would not face any problem for 30 years, he noted.

He said residents had turned open areas and vacant plots into dump yards, causing public hardship. "Hence every lane in town should be kept clean, Satyanarayana advised people while warning of imposition of Rs.500 fine if garbage was dumped in open areas. The CMA appealed to people to cooperate with the sanitation staff with segregated garbage, while stating that the civic body was thinking of collecting fine from those who don't cooperate.

Satyanarayana stated that garbage has become a big problem for the country as thousands of tonnes was being collected daily. "The responsibility of controlling piled-up waste lies with people," he said, adding that people should cooperate in this task to ensure there was no visible garbage.
