Hyderabad origin girl raped, killed in Chicago

Hyderabad: A 19-year-old Indian-American student was sexually assaulted and murdered in Chicago in United States on Saturday by a man on parole, according to the US police. He was arrested on Sunday.

The girl Ruth George, whose family hails from Hyderabad, was studying in University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC). She was found dead in her car in the garage at the university premises on Saturday.

The officials said she was studying second year in Kinesiology, the study of the mechanics of body movements.

According to sources, her family members reportedly lived in Red Hills of Hyderabad and migrated to the United States about 30 years ago. Her mother is working in medical field and father worked in the US postal department.

After she went missing from Saturday night, they approached UIC police and efforts began to trace her. Based on her mobile signals, the police reached the Halsted Street parking garage where they found her body in the backseat of her car.

CCTV footage revealed that along with the victim the suspect entered the garage and came out of the garage after some time.

UIC Police arrested a 26-year-old suspect by name Donald Thurman near the Blue Line at Halsted and Harrison on Sunday after identifying him based on the video footage evidence and on interrogation he reportedly confessed the offence.

Thurman reportedly has a criminal record and was released from prison in December 2018 for armed robbery. He was sentenced to six years, but only served two years and is currently on parole.
