Hyderabad: Plea to rename Mulugu district after Sammakka-Saralamma
Saifabad: The SC, ST, BC, Minority Joint Action Committee comprising representatives Manda Krishna Madiga of the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) and R Krishnaiah (National BC Welfare Association) on Wednesday represented to Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar to rename Mulugu district after tribal deities Sammakka-Saralamma. Mala Mahanadu national president J Chennayya, MLC Ramulu Naik, besides other leaders of people's organisation were present.
Later, they said several districts were named citing the examples of Jogulamba, Gadwal, Rajanna Sircilla, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Bhadradri-Bhuvanagiri, while pleading that Mulug district be re-named after Sammakka-Saralamma, the deities worshipped by crores of Girijans.
They stated that the Sammakka-Saralamma jatara was the biggest tribal event in Asia, where Girijans follow traditional worship practices to appease the twin goddesses. Such practices would become historic if the Mulug district is renamed after them, they added.
