Hyderabad: Senior citizens can now avail GHMC's Rs 5 meal scheme at doorstep
Senior citizens and physically challenged can now avail of the government's Rs 5 meal scheme at the doorstep. On Monday, the state government launched mobile Annapurna canteens to offer the food at doorsteps marking the sixth anniversary of the Annapurna Rs 5 meal scheme which also completed four crore meal plates.
The meals packed in hot packs will be transported in specially designed vehicles. Initially, the meals will be served to 50 beneficiaries and later it will be extended to 1,200 beneficiaries every day. The beneficiaries have already been identified by the GHMC based on the list of pensions.
Chief secretary Somesh Kumar launched the scheme on Monday. Minister for Animal Husbandry Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan were also present.
The minister said that it was a great achievement by the state that the Rs 5 meal scheme has completed six years and provided four crore meals. Currently, around 45,000 people are relishing the meals at 176 centres in the state every day and 35,000 people having meals in GHMC.
