Hyderabad: Sikkulabasti reels under sway of mosquitoes

Kukatpally: Residents of Sikkulabasti area in Yellammabanda are spending sleepless nights because of thriving mosquito menace. They are falling sick, getting afflicted with malaria and dengue fever and ending up in hospitals. The area has been found to be short of fogging machines to provide solace to people.

No municipal staffer is showing interest in taking up spraying of insecticide to get rid of mosquitoes. The locality residents told The Hans India that they don't know whom to approach, following the official indifference to their plight. They are reluctant to come out of houses during the evening hours, because of fear of mosquito sting and falling sick.

The residents informed THI that they have been suffering for the last four years. They claimed that more than five persons have succumbed so far to viral fevers. 'None is bothered when at least three-four get hospitalised on a regular basis. We are forced to get on with life as none is showing interest to come to our rescue'.

As many as 3,000 reside in Sikkulabasti where wastes are dumped in the adjoin tank. Because of the half-complete pipeline work of water body, pythons and mosquitoes are thriving, throwing a scare into the residents, including children. "We don't know how to protect ourselves," they say in anguish.
