Hyderabad: In addition to existing 221 traffic signals, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is planning to provide another 90 new signals in various parts of the city, GHMC Commissioner Dana Kishore informed here on Friday.

The GHMC Commissioner, along with Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Anil Kumar, held a review meeting on the functioning and maintenance of Traffic signals in the city. During the meeting, the Commissioner said out of present 221 traffic signals only 86 signals are functioning properly and another 80 are functioning parts and the remaining 55 signals are not functioning due to implementation of signal-free U-turn ways and where HMR works are going on.

The Commissioner said that the functioning and maintenance of these signals by Bharath Electronics Limited was not satisfactorily due insufficient deployment of employees etc., The BEL could not rectify the defects of non-functioning of signals and maintenance by August 2019 and progress in this regard. The contract period of BEL ends by November this year.

Dana Kishore expressed his dissatisfaction as survey work was completed only on 70 signals out of 221 signals. Further, the Commissioner instructed Chief Engineer Suresh Kumar to depute 25 Assistant Engineers and provide required ladders to conduct a survey on the remaining 151 signals and to complete the work within three days.

Apart from the present 221 signals, another 90 signals have been identified. The Commissioner instructed the officials to put up proposals and to be sent to the State Government for administrative sanction for taking up installation and maintenance if total 311 signals.
