Hyderabad: Training conducted in child-centric disaster risk management

Hyderabad: Centre for Sustainable Development Goals of Dr. Marri Channa Reddy Human Resource Development Institute of Telangana (MCRHRDIT), in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management, Southern Campus (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, organised a 3-day online training course through video conference mode on 'Child Centric Disaster Risk Reduction' for ICDS Supervisors of Women Development and Child Welfare Department, was held from June 22 to 24.

The participants were trained in the basic aspects of disaster risk reduction, and its importance in relation with children, the importance of safeguarding Child Rights during disasters, and also the importance of the proper psychological health of children especially during disasters. The presentation also dealt with the various ways of making children a part of the decision making.

The need for providing a safe physical and psychological environment was discussed by related experts. The various types of hazards, dangers, and risks to children at home, school, and other public and private places were enumerated and solutions offered. More than 200 ICDS Supervisors from all districts of Telangana participated in the training course.

The participants, ICDS supervisors said the course was useful to them in view of the COVID- 19 pandemic that they learnt how to protect health of children and their right to safety in the changed circumstances. B P Acharya, DG of the institute, informed that 900 field staff of the women and child development department would be trained in a phased manner.
