Hyderabad: The Income Tax (I-T) department on Saturday issued notices to a number of Telangana legislators, including a few ministers and sought an explanation on the steep increase in their income and assets between 2014 and 2019.

The I-T department analysed the affidavits filed by the legislators in 2014 and 2019 elections along with the nomination papers to the Election Commission.

The officials were shocked to find out the disproportionate increase in the assets and income disclosed by the legislators in their affidavits.

Sources said that a majority of TRS MLAs, including Health Minister Eatala Rajender and MLAs - P Ajay Kumar (Khammam), A Ramesh (Wardhannapet), M Yadagiri Reddy (Jangaon), G Sunitha (Aler), A Jeevan Reddy (Armoor), G Kamalakar (Karimnagar).

Congress MLA K Rajagopal Reddy and senior leader A Revanth Reddy, who lost the 2018 election, had also reportedly received the I-T notices.

Based on the income details furnished in the affidavits by the leaders, the I-T officials are analysing the I-T returns submitted by the legislators for the last five years.

The I-T department has asked the MLAs to show the source of income that helped them to amass the wealth within five years.

I-T officials maintained that as part of routine process, the legislators have been served notices.

Action will be taken against those who failed to furnish the details sought from the department.
