Kaleshwaram project puts an end to water woes in united Karimnagar district

Karimnagar: The people of united Karimnagar district, who faced acute shortage and scarcity of water once, are now happy with abundance of both drinking and irrigation water in several regions after the completion of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), the dream project of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

Until last year, several mandals such as Choppadandi, Gangadhara, Ramadagu, Husnabad, Koheda, Chigurumamidi, Saidapur, Manakondur, Thimmapur, Benjjanki and Yellanthakunta suffered acute water shortage with the decrease of groundwater levels in the united Karimnagar district.

But the groundwater levels increased after Godavari water is being supplied to various mandals through barrages and reservoirs after the first and second phase works of KLIS were completed. Compared to last year, the groundwater levels were increased at an average of 5 meters height. Especially in Karimnagar and Sircilla districts, the groundwater levels increased enormously with the presence of Lower Manair Dam (LMD) in Karimnagar and Mid Manair Dam (MMD) in Rajanna Sircilla district.

In Karimnagar, groundwater level was increased to 4.94 meters height compared to previous year where as in Sircilla district, it was increased to 6.03 meter height.

Speaking to The Hans India, Mission Bhagiratha (MB) Sircilla district Superintending Engineer said that all physical works were completed successfully and sterilisation works are under progress.

Official are verifying every house for supplying continuous water supply under MB. But the works were halted in midway due to the lockdown and will be completed very soon, he assured.

IT Minister KT Rama Rao suggested the officials to take up Urban Bhagiratha pilot project for 24-hour water supply, 150 litres for each person living in urban areas. As part of his orders, BC Welfare Minister Gangula Kamalakar took initiation and completed works within the prescribed time limit.

Earlier drinking water was supplied on alternate days in urban areas. But with the completion of Urban Bhagiratha project, the officials are gearing up to supply water for 24 hours. They even successfully completed the trial run recently in Karimnagar city.

City Mayor Y Sunil Rao informed that as per the promise given by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and IT Minister KT Rama Rao to the people of Karimnagar, Urban Bhagiratha project was completed successfully and water was supplied to some regions under Karimnagar municipal corporation for 24 hours. Soon, water will be supplied to other regions also after making some small corrections, he added.
