Kaleshwaram water for SRSP soon: KCR

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday said that the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) would get Kaleshwaram water soon. He also announced that the SRSP will be one of the top tourist destinations in Telangana.

The chief minister was speaking during the Question Hour in the Assembly on Thursday. Finance Minister T Harish Rao was replying to a question on the time limit to complete SRSP rejuvenation works raised by TRS member K Vidyasagar Rao.

The chief minister said there was no proposal for rejuvenation of SRSP earlier but there was thought why the flood flow canal should not be changed into a reservoir.

The officials were told to examine and they gave report that it was feasible and the works were being done on expected lines. "There is no water in Nizam Sagar and Singur.

If we can fill Singur, Nizam Sagar and SRSP there will be water all the time. Water will be sent to Singur and Nizam Sagar from Mallanasagar.

Once water reaches from Mallanasagar, it would cater to the needs of Gajwel, parts of Dubbaka and Medak constituencies. As per my knowledge, the water will not decrease in SRSP thereafter," said KCR.

The chief minister said that because of the Kaleshwaram project, the Godavari water is coming in reverse direction. A 3 tmcft canal is a manmade river travelling from Kannepally pump house to Sri Ram Sagar.

About 36 overhead tanks were also completed," said KCR.

The chief minister said that the SRSP was taken to stabilise the existing ayacut under SRSP I and II and the lift schemes on its foreshore.

The scheme envisages to augment SRSP reservoir to stabilise an ayacut of 6.25 lakh acres and create a new ayacut to an extent of 6.2 lakh acres by utilising SRSP as balancing reservoir under Kaleshwaram project apart from, providing drinking water from SRSP for a quantum of 14.5 tmcft. The works are expected to be completed by December 2019, he added.
