Karimnagar: Lack of iodine in food leads to maternal complications, said ICDS Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Sabitha.

Addressing Self-Help Groups on Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) at Manakondur on Monday, the CDPO explained the importance of iodine and warned that iodine deficiency may cause abortions, mental retardation, the disorder in thyroid functioning, etc.

Smith told us that using iodized salt will reduce the complications. Proper storage of salt in tight containers and adding salt in the final stage of cooking will help in the non-evaporation of iodine.

An awareness program was also organized in Manakondur Anganwadi centers for pregnant and lactating mothers. Anganwadi teachers Aruna, Padma, Vijaya, Nirmala and self-help groups members, and others participated.
