Karivena oustees put spanner in reservoir works in Mahbubnagar
Mahbubnagar: The oustees of Karivena reservoir from Chittagattu Thanda of Timmajipet mandal in Nagarkurnool district staged a protest and stopped the ongoing works by stopping the vehicles carrying necessary material for the construction of reservoir, on Wednesday.
The villagers expressed their angst against the State government for taking up works in their lands without paying them the promised compensation. The Karivena Reservoir is being constructed as part of larger Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation project (PRRLI).
The works of the reservoir were stopped a few months ago citing legal tangles and the works got delayed. Now again, the villagers have come in the way of works causing further delay. "The government had promised to pay compensation for our houses and the lands. Only a few persons in the village got paid, while many of us are yet to receive the compensation. While the government is yet to pay the dues, the contractor is taking up the works. We will not allow them to go ahead with the works unless we get the payment," said the agitating villagers.
Under Karvena Reservoir, the villagers of Chittagattu Thanda have lost their farmlands and houses. The contractor has taken up the works while the government is yet to pay the compensation. This has angered the villagers, and they stopped the works and demanded the government and peoples' representatives to first resolve their issues and then take up the works.
