Lavani queen going to perform in the city

NatarangiNaar, Marathi community presents 'Apsara Aali' a unique show performance by famous Lavani queen Surekha Punekar from Maharashtra. The show includes the flavour of Lavani, Thumri, Ghazal, and Mujra item numbers and traditional Lokgeet.

The show is designed as per the concept of different dance forms with live singing and musicians. The dance on Lavanis are extremely high on energy and can attain fast paced rhythm cycles. The danseuses are dressed peculiarly and decked up heavily to lure the audiences.

The basic reason why the art form got the stigma is because the narrative and lyrics could be beyond the code of conduct or social decency. This art form was developed in a time and age when women were supposed to be under the veil. Also, in the beginning, a legit bidding would happen for women performers by male audiences and the performers were to perform on order. Surekha Punekaris a renowned and popular Lavani dancer from Maharashtra.

She started working on stage at a young age eight and skipping school completely. Her parents owned a Tamasha Phad. Around 1986, she started her own Phad. Also known as Lavani Samradni, Surekkha has performed Lavani in various regions of Maharashtra and also the world. She promises to showcase the traditional form with modern touch to appeal to the Hyderabadi art lovers.
