Mahabubnagar: Healthcare experts have expressed concerned over the rising incidents of type 1 diabetes (T1D) among children during the post Covid-19 era.

According to Dr Sekhar, Senior pediatrician and medical director of Ravi Children's hospital informed that earlier there used to be one or two cases of T1D being witnessed in the district. However, during the peak period of covid-19 pandemic many healthcare centres not just in Mahabubnagar, but elsewhere across India have also witnessed rising number of T1D cases. "What we have observed during our practice during the past few months is that the cases of T1D particularly among the children are increasing. Therefore, it is definitely a matter of concern and parents of the children needs to be provided awareness on the symptoms of the T1D, so that early detection and medical intervention can save the children," said Dr. Sekhar.

Explaining further, the pediatric expert cited an example, where they had treated a four year child Akshitha, where she was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms (DKA) with poor glycemic control. She was brought to the hospital in gasping condition where the child was under shock having high sugar levels with positive ketones and severe metabolic acidosis. The team of expert doctors lead by Dr Sekhar immediately identified the problems and provided immediate intubation and successfully saved the baby from illness.

"DKA can happen when your blood sugar is too high for too long. DKA is a serious complication of diabetes and could be life-threatening. Usual symptoms are dry mouth, dry skin, feeling very thirsty, frequent peeing, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, etc. Therefore the general public who have been cured are impacted by Covid-19 must keep in mind that if anyone are facing such symptoms, they need immediate medical interven
