May Day celebrations: CPM vows to intensify fight for labour laws

Khammam: Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary Nunna Nageswara Rao stated that the May Day must be celebrated to commemorate the sacrifices of leaders who fought for labour rights, and everyone should keep that spirit alive in their hearts by continuing the fight for the labour rights.

The 133rd May Day celebrations were held at Sundarayya Bhavan under the leadership of CPM district office secretary R Prakash on Wednesday. The programme started with Nunna hoisting the red flag. Speaking on the occasion, Nunna said, "We should remember it is under the red flag that our leaders in the past had fought against 18-hour work per day in Chicago and it was their rebellion that brought the eight-hour work per day and equal pay for equal work into a reality. But today, many political parties are hoisting their political flags instead of the red flag on the occasion of May Day."

He said that the gap between the working class and the capitalists in our country was increasing day by day. "Only 26 people hold majority of wealth in the country. The 2008 financial crisis is still going on," he said.

The CPM leader further alleged that Congress and BJP parties in the country were annihilating the rights of working class. "The BJP government has amended 18 types of labour laws making it harder to even fight for labour rights that we deserve," he added.

CPM state committee member Ponnam Venkateswara Rao, district executive member Bandi Ramesh and district committee members Madhineni Ramesh, Nandipati Manohar, Jhansi, Bandaru Ramesh, Nagaraju and Gattu Ramadevi and leaders Devendra, Upender, Afzal, Srinivasa Rao, Ashok, Srimannarayana, BVK staff and others participated in the May Day celebrations.
