Milk prices surge twice in 10 days in Hyderabad

With the fall in supply, milk prices surged twice in the last 10 days. The prices have been increased by Rs 2 to Rs 6 depending upon the dairies.

While the state-run Vijaya Dairy toned milk is being sold at Rs 48 per litre, other private dairies like Heritage, Arokya, Dodla, Jersey are being sold at Rs 48 to Rs 50. According to the sources, the price of Amul milk which is being sold at Rs 46 per litre is also likely to get increased in the next few days.

Currently, the rate of the toned milk is sold at Rs 50 while the whole milk at Rs 68 per litre.

The surge in milk prices is due to a dip in milk production in the state. However, the officials said that the situation occurs once in five years. "Farmers shifting from dairy to agriculture is also one of the main reasons for the shortfall in milk production," they said.

At present, there are about two lakh farmers selling milk to the dairies that are being run by cooperative societies in Karimnagar and Mulkanoor.
