While the state-run Vijaya Dairy toned milk is being sold at Rs 48 per litre, other private dairies like Heritage, Arokya, Dodla, Jersey are being sold at Rs 48 to Rs 50. Currently, the rate of the toned milk is sold at Rs 50 while the whole milk at Rs 68 per litre.

The surge in milk prices is due to a dip in milk production in the state. However, the officials said that the situation occurs once in five years. "Farmers shifting from dairy to agriculture is also one of the main reasons for the shortfall in milk production," they said.

At present, there are about two lakh farmers selling milk to the dairies that are being run by cooperative societies in Karimnagar and Mulkanoor.
