Nizamabad: Cities need to be self-sufficient, says finance panel Chairman

Nizamabad: State Finance Commission (SFC) Chairman G Rajesham Goud said that the SFC is making adequate efforts to provide infrastructure facilities in Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Ramagundam cities.

A meeting with the newly elected Mayors of Municipal Corporations was convened on Wednesday at Hotel Plaza in Begumpet, Hyderabad, under the aegis of the Telangana State Finance Commission.

Addressing the Mayors, the Chairman said that cities need to raise taxes to be self-sufficient rather than decentralisation. Measures will be taken to provide adequate financial assistance to provide basic infrastructure and services to the people in Nizamabad city, he added. People of every municipal corporation should try to use their enthusiasm to promote self-help, initiative, raise the standard of living.

Goud said the new laws have been put in place to strengthen local organisations and municipalities and the new municipal law will benefit the common man. Nizamabad Mayor D Neethu Kiran said the Corporation would be self-sufficient by increasing its locally available income sources. She urged the State Finance Commission to look into the proposals for the development of internal roads, drinking water, clean and green programme, other infrastructures, vegetable markets and cemeteries.
