People rally against plastic use in Wanarparthy
Wanaparthy: With an aim to completely eradicate plastics from the district, a huge rally with more than 2,000 college students was flagged off in Kottakota mandal of Wanaparthy district on Wednesday.
The awareness rally was flagged off by district Collector Swetha Mohanthi. While speaking on the occasion the district Collector said that Wanaparthy is the first district in the entire Telangana State which has come out of the concept of eradicating the plastics and replace the same with the use of paper bags.
"Indiscriminate use of plastics has become a big environmental hazard. Plastic is a big menace which is becoming the reason for global warming and destroying the environment. There is a need to spread awareness on this aspect among the public."
"As part of this we have decided to go on a wide spread awareness campaigning in the district. Today we have roped in more than 2,000 college and school students for spreading the awareness rally. To begin with we want to make the Kottakota mandal plastic-free," observed the district Collector.
As part of the plan to overcome the problem of plastic in the district, the district Collector decided to embark on a programme to provide training and awareness and at the same time promote the use of paper bags in place of plastic bags by the customers and shopkeepers as an alternative option against plastics. "We have devised a special action plan to promote use of paper bags and decided to take up the awareness programme on the adverse impact of plastics on environment among the school children and rural people in the villages."
"We have directed the concerned officials to visit the villages and spread awareness against use of plastics among the public. We have also taken steps to remove the plastic garbage and send it to recycling centres," said the Wanaparthy district Collector.
In addition to spreading awareness, the district the district administration has also decided to train the schoolchildren the process of making paper bags. At the same time with the help of officials of Mission for Eradication of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), the district administration has also decided to train the self-help groups to prepare bags which can be used in place of plastics, she added.
