Polluted water poses diarrhoea threat
Yakutpura: Residents of Yakutpura have blamed water contamination in the area after children contracted diarrhoea.
Local social activists took up the matter and brought to notice of the authorities about the grave issues caused by contamination of the water in the area.
The residents of Madina Nagar (Block B) in Yakutpura, has been receiving contaminated water for some time, but the problem remains persistent since last 20 days.
They have been complaining about the issue, even though the authorities responded they are yet to resolve the matter.
The residents said the works remain pending since last 15 days.
According to residents, HMWSSB supplies the water every alternative day for 3-4 hours.
They have been receiving contaminated water for more than 2 hours for the last 3 months.
"The officials neglected, despite regular complaints about the issue. The residents later approached us to us. We contacted the officials of HMWSSB and they took up works. For the past 15 days, in spite of initiative from the authorities the problem remains unresolved, the contamination continues," said Abdul Rahman, a social activist who took up the matter with the officials.
While speaking to The Hans India Abdul Rahman said the issue was raised by all the area's residents and the repair works were started.
He also said that a resident also complaint him about the children falling ill in the area.
He held that some children also fell sick with diarrhea and blamed this for contaminated water.
Due to consumption of contaminated water the residents, especially young ones are falling ill.
A boy also started vomiting and daily two bottles of saline was also given to the patient.
"My grandson fell ill due to this contaminated water and all of us were anxious about his health," said a grandmother of child patient.
Mohammed Lateef, another resident, said "The water supply is equivalent to sewerage water which smells pungent and is clearly visible. This water cannot be used for any purpose. The water is affecting whole areas, we have small children at our home and neighbor child becomes unhealthy, while we stopped using the water."
Syed Mohammed Hussain, another resident said that the works were started by HMWSSB and the labors are asking money from residents for the works.
Since officials are responsible for works taken up by HMWSSB, they should provide payment to workers.
However, we are giving payment to the workers by contribution," he added.
Speaking on the issue, HMWSSB Assistant Engineer Syed Minhaj Ali said that the new connection of water pipe line was given in area two days back.
"Regularly we are checking water quality and the issue will be resolved soon," he added.
