Poor show by students

Hyderabad: Nearly 70 per cent of the degree students of the first, third and fifth semester courses of Osmania University have failed which exposes the hollowness of the tall claims being made by the officials that they are taking series of measures to streamline the higher education in the state.

Out of the total 2,06,454 students appeared in the examinations only 70,660 students have been declared qualified. Senior officials from the Osmania University said: "About 84,028 from the first semester, 65,507 from the third semester and 56,919 from the fifth semester have written their semester examinations." Also, an accurate picture will be out only when it is figured out how many among those qualified have passed with distinction, first, second or third class.

According to the data released by the university, the pass percentage of the BA and BBA students was more than their counterparts in BCom and BSc.The percentage of qualified students of BA in the first semester was 43.51 per cent, in the third semester 50.5 and in the fifth semester it was 62.2 per cent.

Similarly, in case of BBA, the pass percentage in the first semester was 54.72 per cent, in the third semester 59.29 per cent and it is 56.55 per cent in the fifth semester.Contrary to this, the pass percentage of students from the BCom in the first semester is 31.64 per cent, in the third semester 29.63 per cent and in the fifth semester, it is 38.39 per cent.

Standing at the bottom of the pass percentage are students from the BSc. In the first semester, the pass percentage is 26.58, third semester 29.28 and in the fifth semester, the pass percentage of BSc students is 33.67.The sources pointed, if the picture is same across all the affiliated colleges of different universities in the state, then, it is a disturbing issue which needs an urgent remedial measure to address the same.
