Kodangal: The members of Sarpanch Association in Kodangal mandal staged a road blockade at Ambadkar Chowk and boycotted the Haritha Haram programme on Friday demanding the government to immediately revoke its recent order of dual cheque power to Sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch.

Speaking on the occasion, the agitating Sarpanches said that they were in a dilemma due to the dual cheque power by the State government. They said it was coming in the way of development and it needs to be immediately squashed, or else they threatened to further intensify their agitation. "We have spent lakhs of rupees during elections and won as Sarpanch hoping to tale up development works in our respective villages.

However, the State government had taken a unilateral decision of dual cheque power, which is not at all accepted. We will fight and boycott all the government programmes until our problems are solved," said an agitating women Sarpanch.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to Vikarabad District Collector Ayesha Masrath Khanam urging her to immediately resolve the problems of Sarpanches.

"The government is threatening us with suspension for not cooperating in the government programmes. However, we are ready to submit mass resignations if the government goes ahead with its adamant attitude," said Ramesh Reddy, president of Sarpanch Association in Kodangal.
