Second-day rain brings city to its knees in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Life in Hyderabad was thrown out of gear for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as rains battered the city. The aftermath of the downpour resulted in water-logging in many parts of the city and people living in low-lying areas where water had entered into their houses faced tough time to save their belongings.

The areas which were among the worst affected were Shaikpet, Panjagutta, Madhapur, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Asifnagar. According to Telangana State Development Planning Society data, the areas that received maximum rain was Shaikpet, Himayathnagar, Charminar, Asifnagar, Khairatabad, Kukatpally, Nampally, Balanagar, and Serilingampally.

Water logging at Panjagutta flyover created traffic congestion. The Traffic police were seen struggling to clear the water logging. Thanks to the vigorous Southwest Monsoon, due to the upper air cyclonic circulation over south Andhra and its neighbourhood which now lies over interior Karnataka and adjoining areas of Rayalaseema and Telangana, heavy rain occurred at isolated places in Medchal-Malkajgiri, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Siddipet and Hyderabad districts, among others, during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday.

Shamirpet recorded 11 cm rain; Yacharam 10, Ibrahimpatnam, Chegunta 9 each, Bejjanki 8, Hyderabad Airport, Manchal (RR) 7 each, Dubbak, Jagadevpur, Hakimpet IAF Centre 6 each, Gajwel, Medchal, Golconda 5 each, Kondapak Nanganur, Saroornagar 4 each, Dindigul, Ramayampet , Maheswaram, Hayathnagar, Medak 3 each.

There was 2 cm rain each in Sangareddy, Tandur, Mominpet, Vikarabad, Wargal, Doultabad, Sadasivpet, Nawabpet, Marpalle, Shadnagar, Mirdoddi and Kondapur.

The forecast said light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur at many places over Telangana from September 26 to 29. No large change during the period September 30 to October 2 is the weather outlook.
