Sparrow conservation at zoo goes for a toss

Update: 2019-03-20 00:40 IST

Hyderabad: The sparrow conservation project at the Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) that started in 2014 is now defunct.

Networking of Sparrow Conservation Teams (NEST) was launched with an aim to prepare data on sparrow sightings in the city in 95 localities by identifying people and appointing coordinators.

The project did not take off, as the then director of the zoo, P Mallikarjuna Rao, was transferred to another department.

The zoo also sold nest boxes and were priced Rs 25. A senior official at the zoo said quite a few boxes were sold, but the project did not take off as expected.
