Telangana: Farmer gets Rs 7 lakh electricity bill in Kamareddy

Farmer in Kamareddy district received an electricity bill of Rs 7.2 lakh for the lockdown period.

A small farmer in Kamareddy district of Telangana was left in shock after he received an electricity bill of Rs 7.2 lakh for the lockdown period. The last power bill he paid was in February which was Rs 415.

With two fans and three bulbs, the average electricity bill of the farmer, G Srinivas is below Rs 500. The bill was generated when an employee of the electricity department visited his house and took the meter reading for three months. Soon after receiving the bill, the farmer was shocked after seeing the six-digit number. The bill generated was Rs 7,29,417.

While the bill was generated by faulty meter reading, many consumers in the state have also complained about huge power bills during the lockdown period. They said that they were charged 50 to 80 per cent in excess over their average monthly bill.

The domestic consumers were in for a shock last week when the staff visited their houses and served the bills for the total units consumed during the last three months. Many consumers have complained that they were charged 50 to 80 per cent in excess over their average monthly bill. The bills were said to have been inflated as charges were levied, based on the cumulative units for the entire period.
