Telangana govt denies permission for Uranium exploration at Nallamala

Update: 2019-11-14 15:40 IST

After the state government refused to give permission for Uranium mining, it also denied permission for the exploration of the chemical element at Nallamala forest reserve.

The Atomic Mineral Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) has proposed to conduct Uranium exploration without drilling. However, the forest department in a letter said that AMD's proposal has been denied. The forest department made it clear that all the permissions given to the AMD in 2016 for the Uranium mining have been cancelled.

Carrying out excavations in the forest reserve can cause harm to the wildlife, the government quoted in the letter. The Uranium mining has been highly opposed by the public and the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao also said that the permissions will not be given for the mining.

"The exploration might hurt the ecological balance in Nallamala forest reserve and also lead to contamination of drinking water, air and land," said the minister.
