Telangana govt. issues ordinance on pension, salary cut

After the state high court asked the government the rationale behind the pension cut, the Telangana government has brought a Telangana Disaster and Public Health Emergency (Special Provisions) Ordinance 2020 on Tuesday night to continue the salary and pension cut in the state. The ordinance gave an ample indication that the employees are unlikely to get full salaries for another three or four months.

With the ordinance, the government can put off the payments of salaries and pensions to 50 per cent. The rules will be applicable to all the institutions and statutory bodies that are being controlled by the state government such as schools, colleges, local self-government institutions and universities. According to the ordinance, the deferred amount should be payable in six months from the date of deferment.

However, the government make changes in the ordinance and introduce it in the next legislative assembly and council session for the approval.

On Monday, the government told the court they reduced the pay cut from 50 per cent to 25 per cent after the court's intervention. However, the court questioned the government on what basis the pensions are being cut and sought explanation by June 17.
