Hyderabad: Telangana State Union of Working Journalists on Thursday met Director General of Police M Mahendar Reddy and urged him to withdraw the cases filed against nine journalists in Jagtial.

The delegation headed by TUWJ State Secretary K Virahat Ali explained the situation to the DGP.

He said when media persons got information from their sources that officials were transporting the EVMs in a private vehicle in Jagtial Town on Monday night, they rushed to the spot and took photos and videos of the incident and telecasted it on their channels.

The revenue officials who mislead media by creating suspicious circumstances in the transportation of EVMs, later complained to the police alleging that media persons obstructed their duties.

Without any primary investigation, the Jagtial Town police registered cases on nine journalists under sections 447, 186, 505 (2) of IPC and obstructing the right of journalists to report to the public.

The journalist association requested the DGP to withdraw the cases filed on nine journalists. Later, the DGP assured the journalists Union leaders that he will order a detailed enquiry in the case and see that justice will be done to journalists.
