Wanaparthy: Cop on duty knocked down by a car

Wanaparthy: A head constable of Wanaparthy Rural police station was knocked down by a car while carrying out vehicle checks at Eco-Tourism Park near Marrikunta village under Wanaparthy municipality limits on Tuesday.

According to police, Mohammad Salim Khan (57), with the badge number HC 1733, was working as a head constable in Srirangapur police station. He was posted for the vehicle check duty as part of the statical surveillance team (SST) and was about to stop a speeding swift desire car bearing registration number TS32 9778.

However, the driver of the speeding car lost control and knocked down the constable. The constable who suffered severe head injuries and multiple fractures was rushed to Wanaparthy government hospital. However, he died while undergoing treatment.

The police seized the car and arrested the car driver and booked a case against him.

Soon after learning about the incident, Superintendent of Police Apoorva Rao along with Joint Collector Venugopal visited the hospital and condoled the death of the head constable. They promised all help to the family of the deceased. "It is unfortunate that we lost a dedicated and committed police constable while on duty. The police department will always extend support to the family members and all possible monetary help," said the SP.

Joint collector Venugopal also promised to extend all the necessary help. The officials gave Rs 20,000 towards the funeral expenses. Similarly, the police personnel also extended another Rs 20,000 to the family members of the deceased.
